Cellular respiration begins in the cytoplasm, where glycolysis breaks glucose into two pyruvate molecules, yielding a small net gain of ATP. These pyruvates are then shuttled into the mitochondriawhere the Krebs cycle further oxidises them, releasing carbon dioxide and harvesting high-energy electrons. Those electrons flow down the electron transport chain, embedded in the inner mitochondrial membrane, driving the synthesis of the bulk of the cell's ATP via oxidative phosphorylation — a process so efficient it yields roughly 30 ATP molecules per glucose, powering everything from muscle contractions to DNA replication. The proton gradient generated across the inner mitochondrial membrane is maintained by complexes I, III, and IV, which actively pump hydrogen ions into the intermembrane space. This electrochemical gradient, known as the proton-motive force, drives ATP synthase — a remarkable rotary motor enzyme — to phosphorylate ADP into ATP. Without a continuous supply of oxygen to act as the final electron acceptor, this chain would stall, cells would revert to anaerobic fermentation, and ATP output would drop by more than 90 per cent.

Every living cell needs a steady supply of energy to grow, repair itself and respond to its surroundings. Plants capture it from sunlight and store it in the chemical bonds of glucose; animals obtain it from the food they eat.

Cellular respiration is the metabolic process organisms use to convert glucose into usable energy. This occurs primarily in the mitochondria, where the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain work together to generate ATP. The electron transport chain generates the vast majority of ATP through oxidative phosphorylation, harnessing the proton gradient across the inner mitochondrial membrane to drive ATP synthase. This energy currency powers virtually every cellular process — from muscle contraction and protein synthesis to active transport and DNA replication. Understanding these pathways is fundamental to grasping how all living organisms sustain themselves and respond to their environment.
